Somis Real Estate & Information

Somis, California is a tiny town of around 3,000 residents, nestled at the edge of Los Padres National Forest just north of Camarillo. The town, a major agricultural center, offers the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of small town living with easy access to major league sports, cultural events, health care and educational opportunities found in nearby Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Shopping and Dining

Given its small size, Somis doesn't have a lot of shopping inside the city limits. One exception is Fulkerson Hardware, a kind of general store and hardware emporium that been serving the city for more than 100 years. Additional shopping can be found in nearby Camarillo, including a number of boutiques, independent retailers and art galleries. Camarillo is also home to Camarillo Premium Outlets, a collection of more than 150 discount retailers.

Somis real estate owners need never go hungry. Though it's small, the city offers a number of eateries. Among the local favorites are Money Pancho Mexican Restaurant, Little Thai Fine Dining, Rudy's Restaurant for casual home-cooked meals and Safire for California cuisine. Of course, there are many more dining options just down the road in Carmarillo.

Parks and Recreation

One of the best things about owning Somis real estate is the town's nearness to a large number of parks and green spaces. The Conejo Valley Recreation Department owns and manages a collection of area parks, with facilities that include children's playgrounds, picnic areas, ball fields and hiking and biking trails. The system also includes four community centers and an aquatics center. In addition, the nearby City of Camarillo, owns and manages 27 parks and more than 300 acres of green space. Of course, the 1.95 million acre Los Padres National Forest abuts the town and several Pacific Ocean beaches are within a half-hour drive of Somis.


Somis real estate runs the gamut from California ranch-style homes to sweeping mountainview luxury estates. The majority of properties in Somis are single family homes, although you'll find a couple of newer, semi-detached condos in the area. Many area homes have large, multi-acre properties included.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

Sons and daughters of Somis real estate owners in grades K-8 attend the school managed by the Somis Union School District. The district has a current enrollment of around 265 students. For middle and high school, Somis area school children attend the schools of the Camarillo Unified School District. Although there are no private schools within Somis, there are several located nearby, including Cornerstone Christian School in Camarillo.

For higher education, California State University-Channel Islands is located nearby in Camarillo. Also, within an hour's drive, are UCLA, the University of Southern California and Loyola Marymount University.

Somis real estate owners don't have to worry about access to quality health care. The town offers several doctors, dentists and veterinarians offices. For more serious health issues, there is a 24-hour urgent care facility in Camarillo and St. John's Regional Medical Center in nearby Oxnard has a 230-bed acute care facility and offers a variety of outpatient services.

With just 3,000 residents, it's not crowded in Somis, and getting around town is easy. For trips around the region, State Route 34 runs right through the center of town and connects Somis with Camarillo to the south. For longer journeys, Los Angeles International Airport, and its more than 100 non-stop flights daily, is located less than a 90-minute drive away.
