Ojai Real Estate & Information

Ojai Real Estate & Information

Ojai, located east of Santa Barbara and north of Los Angeles, is a small town noted for its mountain vistas, boutique inns and peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. The town, which first came to national attention when Ohio industrialist Edward Libbey discovered the charming setting in the early 20th century, has since become a magnet for Hollywood stars, later-day hippies and entertainers. Among Ojai's past and present residents are TV producer Jerry Bruckheimer, comedian Ellen Degeneres, actor Anthony Hopkins and director David Zucker.

Shopping and Dining

Ojai offers a myriad of unique shopping opportunities. The town is known for its quaint downtown shopping district, with retailers that include Bart's Bookstore, Serendipity Toys and Kingstons Candy Company. The Rains of Ojai, a downtown shopping arcade in business for more than 100 years, features a number of craft stores, clothing boutiques and art galleries.

Ojai real estate owners need never go hungry. The city offers a myriad of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops. Just a few of the local favorites include Osteria Monte Grappa for Italian cuisine, Casa de Lagos for Mexican food, The Ranch House for California cuisine and Sea Fresh for seafood.

Ojai is also the center of one of California's wine regions and more than 30 wineries are located in and around town. Each fall, the city celebrates the harvest at the Ojai Wine Festival.

Parks and Recreation

One of the best things about owning Ojai real estate is the town's nearness to a large number of parks and green spaces. The City of Ojai owns and operates seven city parks, with facilities that include children's playgrounds, ball fields, picnic areas, a skate park, hiking and biking trails and a swimming pool. In addition, the 1.95 million-acre Los Padres National Forest is located just outside of town and Pacific Ocean beaches are just 15 miles west of town.

Living

Ojai real estate runs the gamut from eclectic cottages to California ranch-style homes to manufactured homes to luxury mountainview estates. There's really something for every taste and budget in Ojai.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

Children living in Ojai real estate attend the schools of the Ojai Unified School District. The district, with a current enrollment of around 3,000 students, owns and manages eight schools--five elementary schools, a middle school and two high schools. In addition to the public schools, there are several private schools located in Ojai, including Besant Hill School, The Thacher School and Villanova Preparatory School.

For post-secondary education, the University of California at Santa Barbara and Antioch University are both located in nearby Santa Barbara and a branch of the Brooks Institute of Photography is located right in Ojai.

Ojai real estate owners don't have to worry about access to quality health care. In addition to a number of doctors' and dentists' offices, Ojai is home to Ojai Valley Community Hospital, a 103-bed acute care facility, with a 24-hour emergency room and a variety of other inpatient and outpatient health services.

It's very easy to get around Ojai, given its compact size. For trips around the region, State Route 150 connects the city with the Pacific coast to the west and to Santa Paula to the south. For trips further afield, Santa Barbara Municipal Airport is located with a 30 minute drive of Ojai, and offers non-stop flights to Burbank and San Carlos, California. For more extensive commercial air service, Los Angeles International Airport is within a 90-minute drive of Ojai.
