Fillmore, located in Ventura County midway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California, is a quiet town of around 15,000 residents. Nicknamed the "Last, Best Small Town," Fillmore is known for its historic downtown shopping area and its scenic setting. Because the town's downtown district is largely intact, Fillmore is popular with Hollywood film and television producers. Episodes of "CSI" and "Jericho" have been filmed there.

Shopping and Dining

Fillmore's downtown shopping district is filled with independent retailers offering wares that range from books to holiday decorations. Some of the highlights of Fillmore shopping are Lost and Found Depot Antiques, That's Cherry women's clothing boutique and Lush Meadows General Store. The region, known for its abundant produce, also has a number of farm markets and ethnic groceries.

Fillmore real estate owners need never go hungry. The city offers a myriad of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops, offering everything from burgers to Mexican food to Asian cuisine. Among the local favorites are Vallarta Restaurant for Mexican, Cafe Firenze for Italian and Barbecue Place for classic barbecue in a casual setting.

Parks and Recreation

One of the best things about owning Fillmore real estate is the town's nearness to a large number of parks and green spaces. The City of Fillmore owns and operates more than a dozen city parks, with facilities that include playgrounds, picnic areas, ball fields and hiking and biking trails. The city also manages a large aquatic center. Just outside of town is the 1.95 million-acre Los Padres National Forest, noted for its excellent hiking, climbing and diverse plants and wildlife. Of course, Pacific Ocean beaches area also just a short drive away.

Living

Fillmore real estate runs the gamut from California-style ranch homes to semi-detached condos to manufactured homes to multi-million dollar estates in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains. Although the major of housing in Fillmore consists of single-family houses, there is really something for every taste and budget.

Schools, Health, and Transportation
Children will attend the schools of the Fillmore Unified School District. The District, which has a current enrollment of around 3,855 students, owns and manages seven schools--four elementary schools, a middle school and two high schools. In addition to the public schools, there are a number of private and parochial schools in Ventura County. Among these are Santa Clara High School in nearby Oxnard and Cornerstone Christian School in nearby Camarillo.

For higher education, California State University-Channel Islands in located in nearby Camarillo and Oxnard College, a two-year community college is also just a short drive away. Of course, Los Angeles offers a myriad of other colleges and universities, including UCLA and Marymount University.

Fillmore real estate owners don't have to worry about access to quality health care. In addition to the usual selection of doctors, dentists and veterinarians offices, Santa Paula Hospital, a 49-bed acute care facility, is located in nearby Santa Paula and St. John's Regional Medical Center is located in nearby Oxnard.

It's easy to get around Fillmore due to its compact size. For trips out of town, State Route 126 bisects the city and connects it to Santa Paula and Santa Barbara to the northwest and to Santa Clarita to the west. Although there is no regular bus service within Fillmore, VISTA provides dial-a-ride public transportation service between Fillmore and Santa Paula. For longer journeys, Santa Barbara Municipal Airport and Los Angeles International Airport are within an hour's drive of Fillmore.
